How to Do Cable Lateral Raise
Form Cues
- 1
Set the pulley to the lowest position, grip the handle with the arm furthest from the machine, raise your arm out to the side to shoulder height leading with the elbow
- 2
Keep a slight bend in the elbow throughout and hold briefly at the top — the cable provides constant tension through the full range unlike dumbbells
- 3
Stand far enough from the machine to keep tension on the delt even at the bottom of the movement
- 4
Lower with the same control as the raise, resisting the weight stack the whole way down
Common Mistakes
- ●
Shrugging the trap at the top to squeeze out extra height — keep the shoulder depressed and stop at shoulder height; trap involvement means the delt stopped working
- ●
Using momentum to swing the arm up instead of a slow, controlled raise
- ●
Standing too close to the machine, losing tension at the bottom of the range
Equipment Variations
- ▸
Dumbbell lateral raise as direct substitute
- ▸
Resistance band lateral raise for constant tension alternative
